    GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW
And so we kick it off again. The 108 season of Longview football begins the season with the 80th match up against arguably their biggest current rival, the Lufkin Panthers. The Lobos and Panthers meet for the 12th consecutive season, with the last season they didn’t meet coming in 2005. It’ll be the 58th year in the previous 59 seasons that the two schools have met. In the 12 consecutive years the two schools have played, the Lobos and Pack have met a total of 15 times with two bi-district meetings taking place at Rose Stadium. The two schools have faced off a ridiculous 20 times in the last 15 seasons. In current years, the Lobos have seen themselves take back the series from the Panthers (who had take control following an 11-game winning streak over Longview). The Lobos are 6-2 over the Panthers since the start of the 2011 season. Once again, the two teams have a chance of meeting in the bi-district round of the playoffs this fall, which would mark the two schools meeting for the third time in the last four years in round one. The two schools have met 9 previous times in the playoffs, which is three more times than Longview has met any other team in the post season. After no meetings in post season play in 55 years, the two schools have met four times in the playoffs in the last 15 years. Longview comes into the game looking to shake off a disappointing season, by Lobo standards. With the return to the top classification in 2016, the Lobos saw themselves win a share of the district crown for the second straight season (and 12 district crown in the last 13 seasons). However, having to travel to Beaumont in round one proved to be too much for Longview as the Lobos dropped their first bi-district contest in 11 seasons (dating back to 2005). It marked the first time under head coach John King that Longview did not each at least 9 wins in a season (finished with 8). The bi-district playoff loss was just the second under John King, both losses being by a single point (34-33 last season again West Brook, and 14-13 in 2005 against South Garland). The Lobos enter 2017 looking to improve on a horrendous defensive campaign that saw the team give up the 3rd most points allowed in school history. Lufkin welcome’s Todd Quick back as head coach for his 6th season as the helm of the Pack. The Panthers will be looking to turn 2017 back into the days of old, as no Lufkin team has finished with more than 7 wins since Quick’s first season at the helm when the team when on an unexpected run to round three in a 9-4 finish. Since that 2012 season, Lufkin has seen 5-6, 6-5 and consecutive 7-4 seasons with all four ending in bi-district losses. The Panthers, following Longview’s step, will be looking to improve on last year’s defensive embarrassment as the Pack allowed 391 points last season in one of the worst defensive outputs in school history. Since 2006, the Panthers have seen their struggles grow. Lufkin has amassed a playoff record of 4-11. Longview welcomes Lufkin to Lobo Stadium looking to hold onto a streak 14 years in the making. The Panther make their 6th trip to Lobo Stadium since their last victory in Longview back in 2003. Since, the Lobos and Panthers have had some outstanding duels in the venue. In 2007, the Lobos saw a 24-0 lead disappear before holding on to knock off the Panthers 31-24. In 2008, Lufkin held a 20-9 lead in the 4th quarter before the Lobos clawed back to take the lead. The Pack tied the game on a last second field goal as the game entered overtime. Three overtimes later, the Lobos came out victorious in a 45-37 showdown. In 2011, Lufkin took a 10-0 lead early before Longview rattled off 24 unanswered points in a 24-10 victory. In 2013, after the Panthers took an early 14-7 lead in the 2nd quarter..Longview scooted off for 35-points in the third quarter in en route to a 55-30 victory, one of the highest scoring games in the series history. And in Lufkin’s last visit in 2015, the Lobos led through the contest before Lufkin scored a last minute touchdown only to have their extra point attempt blocked in a 21-20 victory for the Lobos. Overall, the two schools will be looking for another fantastic edition of the series. The two schools remain just one game apart in the long, storied series. Let the 80th edition begin.

ON THIS DATE IN LOBO HISTORY: September 1st
In 2012, Longview traveled to Gerald J. Ford Stadium to be apart of the Tom Landry Classic against the Coppell Cowboys. Starting quarterback Bivins Caraway suffered a season ending second quarter injury after the Cowboys came storming out of the gate, in route to a 21-0 halftime lad for Coppell. The Lobos never got things going on the day, having to use a 3rd quarter extra point return and a last second hailmary touchdown to prevent from shutout by Coppell. The Cowboys racked up 287 yards passing, holding the Lobos to just 138 yards rushing in the 41-8 beat down. It remains one of the worst losses in the John King era for the Lobos.

There's been a bit of a umph that's gone out of the series the last couple years. I think a bit because Lufkin's struggles to get out of the first round and because of how many times we've faced each other over the last decade. I mean this will be our 23rd time to face off since 2000, which is just insane.

But it's definitely still one of our biggest games of the season. And it's definitely one of our top two rivals right now (with JT being the other one).
